Socialization

Education has been characterized by an emphasis on socialization, the process of forming a person’s preferred understanding of right and wrong. Socialization occurs when a person is influenced by teachers and the society around them, with a particular focus on virtues like hard work, equity, and being “nice.” In addition, young children may be assigned reading material that warns them of consequences if they do something wrong.

Mass education

Mass education has played a major and sometimes regressive role in human history. As a means of social sorting, mass education has promoted homogeneity. It has also promoted equality, generating consciousness in the masses and teaching them what their duties are in work and in society. This concept was first popularized in the United States, then spread to Britain and France. As a result, the idea of mass education gained much more prominence in both countries.

Remedial education

Remedial education has been widely touted as a promising solution to the educational achievement gap. While some scholars and leaders have argued that such programs are counterproductive, time has proven the effectiveness of remedial education. For example, the City University of New York System enrolls 174,146 students each fall. Although students who are not ready for college may take remedial courses, these students may not have access to the necessary materials to succeed.

SATs

The SATs measure a student’s verbal, mathematical, and analytical abilities. Minorities make up a significant percentage of SAT test takers, and the percentage is increasing. In 2001, Hispanic students made up 9 percent of the SAT-taking population. At the same time, they made up 14 percent of the high school population. Despite these results, education plays a significant and remedial role in SATs.

Costs
